Creative Writing   

This 8-week course will build a foundation for reading fiction closely as a writer and introduce key craft concepts and techniques. Through guided reading, discussion, and writing exercises, you'll explore elements such as plot, conflict, dialogue, and point of view while generating material for your own fiction. Participants will have the opportunity to submit a final piece—such as a short story draft, story fragments, or a novel excerpt—for instructor feedback.

Welcome to the Fall Creative Writing Challenge! In this class you will receive a daily creative writing prompt from the instructor to fuel your creativity and build a daily writing habit. The goal is to write every day (even if just for a few minutes) for one month. Each week the class will meet to share the successes and challenges of writing every day, recharge our creativity, and connect with other writers. Each class session will include an in-class writing prompt, a chance to share written work, and other inspiring activities. No previous writing experience necessary.

Level up your fiction and receive feedback on your work! Each week, we’ll dive into essential elements of fiction, including character, narrative voice, dialogue, point of view, and conflict/stakes. Class time will include sample readings, discussion, and writing prompts to spark new ideas and practice what you’ve learned. Starting on week four, we’ll begin workshopping and critiquing each other’s stories, with instructor guidance on how to give constructive, encouraging feedback. We’ll end our time together with tips for revising your work and guidance on how to submit to literary magazines.

In this four-week workshop, you'll learn how to identify the narrative arc that connects your experiences into a compelling memoir. Through discussion, examples, and guided exercises, you'll clarify your memoir's central theme, determine what belongs in the story, and create a roadmap for moving forward.

So many people pass through your life, but no one knows everything you have done, valued, or experienced. In this two-session workshop, you'll learn a proven template for writing your own obituary or one for a loved one. Through guided discussion, writing exercises, and feedback, you'll create a lively and accurate record of a life story worth remembering. Why not have the last word?
