Music Classes   

Learn how to read music and interpret chord diagrams for the guitar as well as basic strumming rhythms/patterns. We will play basic tunes together as a class. Bring your own guitar (preferably acoustic) to each class.

For this class, you should be comfortable with basic music reading and chord knowledge. The class will review material as needed from Applied Guitar 1 and you will continue to learn to read music as well as tablature. More advanced strumming patterns will be introduced, and beginning blues/rock examples will be explored.

Have you ever had a song idea but didn’t know how to write it? Have you wanted to compose an instrumental piece and didn’t know where to start? Are you struggling to finish songs because you don’t know what they need? This course is the primer you need to help get your feet off the ground and get those pieces finished. Among other topics, the course will cover how to write a compelling melody, create chord progressions and accompaniment patterns, effectively set text to a melody, and develop compelling musical phrases and forms. Related topics covered in the class will include notation customs, style and genre customs, idiomatic instrumental writing, and an introduction to music recording technology.

This is an intermediate guitar course focusing on folk and country blues fingerstyle picking. Play rhythm with thumb while picking accompanying melody. Goal will be to gain the ability to convert any melody into a full band sound on a single guitar.

Take your guitar playing to the next level as you build the rhythm, groove, and musicianship used in funk, blues, and jazz. Through live online instruction and hands-on practice, you will improve your timing, explore syncopation, groove-based chord progressions, comping patterns, and foundational improvisation. You will also develop the skills to play confidently with other musicians and lock into a groove across a variety of styles. This course is designed for adult guitarists who are comfortable with basic chords, smooth chord changes, and maintaining a steady tempo.

Learn beginning harmonica techniques such as getting single notes, popular melodies, blues, bent notes, and improvising! Music reading is not required. Students must provide their own basic 10 hole, diatonic harmonica in the key of C.

Intended for current harmonica players who need new ideas to further develop their playing; you should already know how to get single notes, play simple songs, and some basic blues, and this class will explore harmonica techniques.

Intermediate Continuing Piano is a group piano course for students progressing above the elementary level. The study of early intermediate level piano solos from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods as well as course work with technical exercises and piano pieces utilizing different rhythmic variations and theoretical ideas will be included.

Want to get going on mandolin? This basic course will teach tuning the instrument, basic picking techniques, essential scales and chords. Along the way, we’ll learn to play a few classic bluegrass and old time tunes. No need to be able to read music or have any musical ability at all. But you will walk away from this course with plenty of both to carry you onward. Come kick-start your skills on mandolin today! Students need to bring their own mandolin.

Strum a song using easy chords during the first class! The ukulele has always been a delightful go-to for folks who want to get started playing music now. Learn various strumming patterns and how to pluck melodies on an instrument you can carry with you virtually anywhere. Students are required to provide their own ukuleles.

More chords, more songs, more strumming patterns, more ukulele fun! If you would like to continue on from Ukulele 1 or have some working knowledge of the ukulele and would like to learn more, then this is your class. In addition, learn the rhythmic finger roll, add tremolo to your strumming, and learn how to invent your own chords. Students are required to provide their own ukuleles.

Let’s get together and learn our favorite songs and perform them. Here’s a class that will help you hone the skills that you already have and put them to good use. Every week we’ll work on the songs you want to learn. Then perform them with rest of the class. We’ll work on techniques for nailing down a song more effectively, how to work around tricky chords, dynamics and performance skills. But mostly we’ll have good old fashioned sing-along, play-along fun! At least a low-intermediate proficiency with ukulele needed.
