This course introduces the basics of sewing. The topics covered include operation of a sewing machine, familiarity with essential equipment, choosing and preparing a pattern, information on fabric and interfacing selection, and construction of a simple project (typically a skirt) which includes key garment construction techniques: Students will learn: Fabric selection, understanding a pattern; laying out a pattern, marking details, sewing seams; inserting a basic zipper; adding pockets, attaching a waistband and hemming techniques. This is also a great refresher course. Individual help is given along with demonstration of techniques to complete each aspect of garment sewing.

Topics include: collars, sleeves, patch pockets, buttonholes, and some minor alterations for proper garment fitting. Individual help is given along with demonstration of techniques to complete each aspect of garment sewing. Basic sewing experience is helpful.

You'll take accurate body measurements and draft custom-fit bodice, skirt, sleeve, and trouser blocks tailored to your own measurements. Along the way, you'll explore the principles of fit analysis and basic pattern adaptation, giving you the skills to adjust patterns for a better fit. You'll leave the course with a personalized set of pattern blocks that you can use as the foundation for future sewing projects designed specifically for your body.

Bring your Halloween costume idea to life while building the sewing skills to make it a reality. You'll design, construct, and complete a custom costume as you learn sewing fundamentals, pattern modification, fitting techniques, and creative embellishment methods. With guidance throughout the process, you'll create a one-of-a-kind costume and gain the confidence and skills to design and sew future costumes on your own.

Topics may include any of the following: garment alterations and clothing repairs, adjusting commercial patterns for proper fit, invisible zipper application, understanding interfacing and stabilizers and much more dependent on student interests. Students will bring in their own garments to work on with guidance from the instructor. Individual help is given along with demonstration of various techniques based on students' interests.

Take your sewing machine or serger out of storage—or out of the box—and learn how to use it with confidence. You'll become familiar with your machine's parts, basic operation, maintenance, stitching techniques, troubleshooting, and finishing methods. Through several hands-on, skill-building projects, you'll gain the knowledge and confidence to operate your machine independently and be ready to tackle future sewing projects.
